Motorist mauls MMDA enforcer
It was a case of road rage, but now the rage has gone online.
Netizens continue to slam a Metro Manila motorist who was caught on video assaulting a traffic enforcer at Tandang Sora in Quezon City Saturday.
The video, which spread like wildfire on social media networks late Tuesday, and was first posted in Interaskyon.com, showed the motorist now identified as Robert Blair Carabuena mauling Saturnino Fabros, a traffic enforcer of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA).
Carabuena is an executive of multinational tobacco company Philip Morris. In a statement, cigarette maker Philip Morris Fortune Tobacco Corp. (PMFTC) confirmed that Carabuena is its employee.
"While the complete facts surrounding the incident are not yet clear to make a full appreciation of the situation, the company would obviously not condone inappropriate conduct by any of our employees," PMFTC said. It added that it will closely monitor investigations that have been launched on the incident.
Meanwhile, in an interview with the TV 5 network, which also exclusively caught the video of the incident by chance, Fabros on Wednesday said it was the first time he experienced such treatment from a motorist. He's been as a traffic enforcer for 30 years now.
"Para akong mapapaiyak nun pero pinigilan ko lang. Napahiya po ako (I had to stop myself from crying even if I was humiliated)," Fabros said.
He added that he only called Carabuena's attention for a wrong turn at the corner of Capitol Hills Drive and Tandang Sora.
MMDA Legal and Legislative Affairs staff have confirmed that a case is being drafted against Carabuena and will be filed at the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Wednesday.
In a separate statement, MMDA's Francis Tolentino defended the MMDA traffic enforcer.
“We cannot allow this aggression and shameless attack against our men who are only doing their job as best as they can, regardless of the risks they face in the streets every day,” Tolentino said, as he demanded a public apology from Carabuena.
Under the Revised Penal Code, direct assault can be filed against any person who shall attack, employ force, or seriously intimidate any person in authority while in the performance of official duties. It is punishable by a prison term of six months to six years.
Public engagement
Malacañang said the social media outburst was a show of "public engangement."
"We commend our vigilant citizens who actively seek accountability from individuals in both the public and private sectors," Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a statement.
He added that such campaigns link individuals through social and traditional media to improve "efforts to achieve social change, by bringing to light any possible wrongdoing."
"Public engagement is the bedrock of democracy. It is at its most potent and powerful when the constant scrutiny of the citizenry serves as a deterrent to the illicit and unlawful," Lacierda said.
Online rage
"Dear Robert 'Blair' Carabuena, mabilaukan ka sana sa ginawa mong pang-mamaltrato sa MMDA. Justice for MMDA officers!" Gerald Santos said via Twitter.
For her part, Twitter user Kristine said: "One of the reasons why Pinas is not improving is because of some people who think highly of themselves."
"I don't want to imagine what could've happened if this Blair Carabuena had a gun in his car," Jong D.G. tweeted.
Some netizens, meanwhile, urged Filipinos to reflect on the public's treatment of government employees.
"We may have a lot of things against the government but it does not warrant us to act like arrogant douche bags," Vincent Benjamin said via Twitter.
Pau Rosales tweeted: "They (MMDA officers) work rain or shine to make sure our traffic situation is somehow bearable, must we abuse them? They are also humans."
Carabuena allegedly deleted his social networking accounts amid the flood of negative comments, prompting further outburst of emotions.
"Ang tapang mo sa kalye pero ngayon, tago ng tago from social media (You were arrogant in the street yet you now hide from social media)," Myra Santiago said via Twitter.

Homeless man with golden radio voice
This clip speaks for itself -- literally. The Columbus Dispatch discovered a homeless man along Ohio's I-71 claiming to have "the God-given gift of voice." His name is Ted Williams, and he's an ex-radio announcer according to the note he scrawled on a piece of cardboard that he uses to solicit change from drivers. And wow, does Williams ever deliver for a dollar. Williams tells the Dispatch about his struggles, but thankfully "alcohol and drugs and a few other things" haven't diminished Williams' velvety vocal cords, and he says he's two years clean now.
"I have a god given gift of voice. I'm an ex-radio announcer who has fallen on hard times. Please! Any help will be greatfully appreciated. Thank you and God bless. Happy holidays," says Williams' roadside sign for help.
Like Williams, the radio industry has fallen on hard times in the past decade, but given the viral power of this video, we expect more than a few morning show and late-night appearances, and perhaps even a job, will be in Williams' near future. In fact, Reddit reports that Ted has already been tracked down by Columbus area radio show The Morning Zoo and will appear on tomorrow morning's show, so tune in!
CityVille is Facebook record-breaker: biggest ever
Launched just a couple of months ago, Facebook smash CityVille is not just the biggest game on the social networking platform, it's the biggest Facebook game ever.
CityVille averaged over 84 million monthly users this past weekend, which means it's bigger than previous record-holder and Zynga stablemate FarmVille ever was: the latter's high-water mark was 83.76 million users, a number it recorded last March.
Though the games are superficially similar, sharing a common crop-tending mechanic, CityVille's fields and barns are a literal and figurative background to its central theme: building a bustling city full of residents, businesses, and civic structures. It's a faster-paced game than FarmVille, and, if anything, it's even more aggressive in encouraging players to build in-game connections with real-life friends -- a factor that's bound to be helping its meteoric rise.
And boom town CityVille is looking set to grow even bigger. It continues to post gains of about two million players per day, according to blog InsideSocialGames, and fueled by the burgeoning popularity of Facebook in the U.S. and overseas the game could eventually top 125 million monthly players.
CityVille's success is good news for the game's developer, Zynga, which had been seeing a downturn in its total userbase over the latter part of last year. Almost all Zynga's Facebook titles have posted gains over the last month, including FarmVille, though at less than 60 million monthly players, it's a mere shadow of its former self.
Perhaps most impressively of all, the seven most-played games on Facebook are currently all Zynga games.

Short of gaming, this notebook should handle just about everything without batting an eye, and you’re getting a respectable $200 off the already discounted retail price.
Everyone knows you can score a flip phone or cheap feature phone for free just by inking a two-year contract, but typically, top-tier smartphones like Samsung’s Fascinate will still cost you a couple Benjamins. If you drop into a Verizon store, you’ll still lay down $199.99 for a Fascinate, but on Friday, Sam’s Club will have the offer it for just 96 cents with the same contract. Not too bad for one of our favorite new superphones.

Justin Bieber Ridiculed for 'German' Mistake
The Internet is in a tizzy over an interview in which teen dream Justin Bieber appears to not be familiar with the word "German."
In the interview, a talk show host from New Zealand asks the 16-year-old a few true-or-false questions, including the query "True or false: 'Bieber' is German for basketball."
Bieber gets confused over the word "German," and the interviewer repeats it.
After this back-and-forth, Bieber says he doesn't know what the TV host means, and finally gives up on the question, proclaiming: "We don't say that in America."
It seems obvious that Bieber was simply perplexed by the interviewer's thick Kiwi accent (which the host himself points out). Or perhaps he was just annoyed at being asked an inane question.
Bieber offers his own explanation, via Twitter. "I thought this interviewer in NZ said 'Jewman' instead of 'German' people think I don't know what German is?"
Either way, the video has gone viral as blogs have ridiculed Bieber for exactly that as he did actually read the cue card that seems to say the word 'German.' One such blog, The Huffington Post, had to amend its post making fun of Bieber when it found an interview the singer did in Germany way back in August, in which he talks about his German great-grandfather and even counts to ten in the language.
Bieber mentions that interview on Twitter, saying "I count in GERMAN and translate my own name. Guess I know what German is. Guess home schooling is working out. Do your research next time b4 making a lame attempt at hating on a 16 year old."
In other Bieber news, Kim Kardashian says she's getting tweet threats from Bieber's rabid fans after the reality-TV star jokingly tweeted that she had "Bieber fever."
She contracted said "fever" when she met the 16-year-old at the White House Correspondents' Dinner last weekend. Bieber answered Kardashian's tweet by calling her his "girlfriend," which was, apparently, enough to ignite the ire of his most ardent fans. Bieber responded telling his fans to "calm down": He added an invitation for everyone to be friends and "hang out often." No doubt his fans would not mind that opportunity.
