HP buys Via nano processors, but for which laptop?

Despite Intel's barrage with its Atom architecture, Via has managed to land a contract with HP for its nano low-power CPU. To be fair, the Via nano is actually good and has surpassed Intel's Atom in many performance benchmarks, even if Atom is lower power. Now, we don't yet know what HP will do with these CPUs. Is it for a successor of the HP mini-note 2133? Only time will tell.

Sony to enter ultra-low-cost laptop market

It might be the “race to the bottom” that Sony had feared: the netbook market is getting hot (if that wasn’t obvious), and with major players like Dell & HP jumping in, Sony has little choice but join the fight. Digitimes reports that Foxconn Electronics (a contract manufacturer) is “set to manufacture the notebook for Sony”. While not everyone agrees with the scope of the work to be done by Foxconn (build the whole thing, or only provide the components), there’s little doubt that major Japanese manufacturers are going to enter this market. And I bet that they will overwhelmingly choose Intel’s Atom as their processor of choice.

Folding Laptop

While laptops are meant to be portable, those 19.5" monsters will definitely make it a chore to lug around - but not if you can help it with this folding laptop. A quick search on eBay unearthed this gem of a Xentex-brand prototype laptop that features a hinge right down the middle, enabling it to be folded right in half. This won't change its weight in any way, while the laptop ends up twice as thick, but at least it makes it all the more manageable to tote around. A hinge splits the laptop's display into a couple of 13.3" panels, and each of them can be rotated independently, allowing two people to watch the display from either side of the table although only one person will be able to have full control of the keyboard. It comes with a built-in floppy drive, but lacks an optical drive. Other specifications include an 850MHz Athlon processor and over 128MB of RAM. It is currently going for $100, making it a great conversation starter if you plan on turning your home into a tech museum.
