Grilling and Cancer

Is There Harm In Grilling Meats?

Summer in the United States means cookouts and family barbecues. Hamburgers, hot dogs, steaks and chicken are the epitome of the perfect weekend summer meal.

For years, there has been controversy over whether grilled red meat and chicken could cause cancer. This subject has been circulated through email chains as being true and false, and there have even been conflicting reports on television in the past. So, what do we believe?

Does Grilling or Barbecuing Meat Cause Cancer?

According to Dr. Ted Gansler, director of Medical Content for the American Cancer Society, eating excessive amounts of grilled meat or chicken can increase your risk of developing cancer. This is also true for pan-fried meats at high temperatures.

Current research tells us that the well done or charred meats pose the highest risk. The problem that cooking at very high temperatures break down the amino acid, creatine, in meats. When this occurs, chemical is formed, heterocyclic amines (HAs). HAs are carcinogenic and are linked to cancer.

Is there a Safe Way to Grill?

Keep in mind, that grilling occasionally appears to be okay. Excessive consumption of grilled foods cooked at a very high temperature is the risk factor for developing cancer.

Experts recommend that foods be cooked at lower temperatures, even if it means cooking longer. The goal is to prevent charring the meat. You can do this on a charcoal grill by allowing the flames to go down after lighting. On a gas grill, try raising the grill rack, away from the heat.

Using skewers is also an excellent way to limit the amount of grilled meat consumed during a meal. Small pieces of meat, combined with fresh fruits and vegetables on the grill make for an attractive, and delicious meal.

Keep in mind that just like everything in life, moderation is key. There is only an increased risk of cancer when excessive amounts cooked at high temperatures are consumed. You still can enjoy grilled meats, but just do so in moderation and when cooked at low temperatures.

Adobe Calls Out Apple for Lack of Flash on iPad

While the iPad sports a lot of features, one of them isn’t Flash. The Adobe plug-in is nowhere to be found on Apple’s device, meaning that many online games and video sites (such as Hulu) aren’t usable on Apple’s tablet device.

Don’t think Adobe hasn’t noticed this omission. In a stern blog post, the Flash team praised the inclusion of PDF and ePub support in the iPad, but quickly went on to condemn the company Steve Jobs built:

“It looks like Apple is continuing to impose restrictions on their devices that limit both content publishers and consumers. Unlike many other ebook readers using the ePub file format, consumers will not be able to access ePub content with Apple’s DRM technology on devices made by other manufacturers. And without Flash support, iPad users will not be able to access the full range of web content, including over 70% of games and 75% of video on the web.”

Adobe is calling out one of the biggest gripes developers have with Apple’s App ecosystem: its restrictive, closed environment where Apple must approve all programs that run on its platform.

While we doubt this post will sway the minds of the Apple leadership, it does escalate the battle between the two companies over the future of the web.

Bata eliminates Archer in 10-ball Challenge

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino pool legend Efren 'Bata' Reyes eliminated fellow former world champion American Johnny 'Scorpion' Archer, 15-11, in the Fat Boy 10-Ball Challenge in Indiana, US.

The win set up a titular showdown between Reyes and local bet Brandon Shuff, who brought down countryman Shannon Murphy, 15-9.

Reyes traded racks with Archer until they were tied at 8-8.

In the 17th rack, the American missed a low percentage 8-ball allowing Reyes to take the rack, then break and run the next two.

He never looked back after that and earned a seat in the finals.

Reyes, a native of Angeles City and pride of Puyat Sports, is also competing in the 9-ball division of the 12th Annual Derby City Classic.

Reyes will go up against Bernie Collins of the USA while stablemate and former World No.1 Francisco “Django” Bustamante will meet Sylver Ochoa of Mexico.

Also competing in the 9-ball competition is veteran pool player Rodolfo “Boy Samson” Luat.

Another Puyat Sports ace Alex “The Lion” Pagulayan stamped his class in the one-pocket division, eliminating last year’s champion John Schmidt in a 3-0 victory. – by Marlon Bernardino

Facebook Increases Photo Sizes

Frustrated with Facebook’s maximum image size? According to the Facebook Developers’ page, users can expect to see larger photo sizes beginning tomorrow and rolling out over the next three weeks. Before you get too excited, know that the increase is going from 604 pixels to 720 pixels, but hey, bigger is bigger, right?

If you have a Facebook application that queries the photo FQL table or uses photo.get, be sure to update your styling to accommodate these new sizes.

It’s not just photo uploads that are changing in size; Facebook is also changing the size of profile pictures. In the next few weeks profile pictures will move to 180×540 pixels, this is down from 200×600. Yeah, that’s right, profile pictures will now be smaller. Again, developers, adjust your applications accordingly.

One of the biggest complaints that users of Facebook have with the network is the limit on picture size. As one of the largest photo-sharing sites on the web, the limits are indeed kind of surprising. Still, it’s nice to see an increase in pixel space, even if the increase isn’t earth-shattering.

What do you think about Facebook’s photo changes?

Inappropriate Ads in Facebook

I found this ad in facebook and i think its quite inappropriate to advertie this kind of things. I just hope politicians and supporters should play it nice and clean. This is a clear proof of propaganda devices that are used by the anti-Villar, anti-Gibo, & anti-Erap people.

I'm not into politics but i think Gibo Teodoro is the best presidential candidate. "Galing at Talino" like in the commercials, i believe any leader should have the proper knowledge and talent and not just have heart and rely always to God.

Cyber-spies hack computers of 3 RP gov’t offices

Suspected cyber-spies from the Chinese mainland have hacked into computers of at least three government offices in the Philippines as well as the Asian Development Bank office based in Manila, Canadian researchers said over the weekend.

In the study titled “Tracking Ghostnet: Investigating a Cyber Espionage Network”, the research team Information Warfare Monitor said a cyber spy network based almost entirely in China has hacked into computer networks around the world, stealing classified information from governments and private organizations in more than 100 countries including the Philippines.

The Ottawa-based think tank, composed of SecDev Group and University of Toronto’s Munk Center for International Studies, said the cyber-espionage network compromised 1,295 infected computers in 103 countries. Thirty percent of the infected computers are considered high-value and include the ministries of foreign affairs of Iran, Brunei, Bangladesh, Latvia and Indonesia.

In the Philippines, the cyber-espionage system has infected one computer in the Department of Foreign Affairs, two computers in the Department of Science and Technology, one computer in the Bureau of International Trade Relations of the Department of Trade and Industry and at least one computer in the Asian Development Bank.

Two computers in the Embassy of Thailand in the Philippines were also infected with malware that allows hackers to steal sensitive data and take control of the computers. The study said the embassy computers were most likely infected in August 2008 after a spike in malware infections spread across 46 countries.

The cyber-espionage ring also infected computers of the Associated Press office in the United Kingdom, the Office of the Dalai Lama in India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Secretariat in Indonesia and Malaysia.

The Department of Justice on Monday said the alleged hacking of government computers in the foreign affairs, trade and industry and science and technology departments is a matter of national security.

“If you hack diplomatic exchange, that will affect national security,” Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez told reporters.

Gonzalez said he will order an investigation as soon as he receives confirmation of the alleged hacking incident.

DFA Spokesman Ed Malaya said the department “takes seriously reports such as this, and will carefully look into its details, including the methodologies used to arrive at their observation.”

“As part of due diligence, we will undertake all measures to maintain and ensure the integrity of our IT systems,” he added.

Cyber-espionage

The Canadian team said the GhostNet system directs infected computers to download a Trojan known as gh0st RAT that allows attackers to gain complete, real-time control of the computers. The infected file is usually a seemingly harmless Word or PDF file which, once opened, unleashes malicious code on the machine.

The code exploits a vulnerability in the user's computer, and uses it to order the computer to connect with a server somewhere else in the world. Once infected, hackers can search and download files and covertly operate microphones and web cameras attached to the computer.

The study found that the network was based almost exclusively in the Hainan province in China, although the researchers stopped short of saying the Chinese government was involved in the system.

In the study, the research team said it had not been able to ascertain the type of data obtained by the attackers apart from the basic system information and file listings of the documents.

It noted, however, that the system was focused on the governments of South and Southeast Asian nations.

“Many of the high confidence, high-value targets that we identified are clearly linked to Chinese foreign and defense policy, particularly in South and South East Asia. Like radar sweeping around the southern border of China, there is an arc of infected nodes from India, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Vietnam, through Laos, Brunei,
Philippines, Hong Kong, and Taiwan,” the study noted.

The group, however, said the malware could have been deployed “by a random set of infected computers that just happens to include high profile targets of significance to China, collected by an individual or group with no political agenda per se.”

It said a single individual or group of individuals such as criminal networks could have targeted the high value computers for profit. It also did not discount the possibility that the network of infected computers could have been targeted by a state other than China, but operated physically within China to mislead authorities.

The researchers say their findings should serve as a wake-up call to policy makers, as they "demonstrate the relative ease with which a technically unsophisticated approach can quickly be harnessed to create a very effective spynet.” -- With reports from RG Cruz and Marieton Pacheco, ABS-CBN News
